• February minutes approved.

Discussion Topic: Transitions – to and from Middle School and beyond.
Mark Walther – Hoffman Principal

• A transition day is scheduled for all 2nd graders entering intermediate schools – this includes a tour and setting up pen pals for each student.
• Parents provide input on learning style, social issues, health concerns and what type of environment their child performs best in. This helps the placement of the student in the intermediate classroom.
• There is also dialogue between the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers to determine placement.
• There is also a parent orientation for parents at the intermediate school – parents provide key information through written letters to the principal of the intermediate school.
• What parents can do to prepare their child for intermediate school:
Get your child ready for the time change.
Get your child used to the assignment notebook.
Get good habits established early and set a routine before the start of school.
Talk to your child about the transition day and how it went.

Jim Woell – Attea Principal

• 5th graders visit middle schools in February. They meet band, choir and orchestra groups. PE teachers provide overview. Tours of the school are led by 7th and 8th grade student ambassadors. Jim spends time with students after the tours.
• Biggest fears students have about transitioning to middle school are: moving from class to class, team placement, being on time and getting their lockers open.
• There are two teams: Omni and Journey.
• Teachers from the middle schools meet with the intermediate school teachers and learn about each child individually.
• Parent orientation takes place after student visitation day. Parents are asked to submit their child’s foreign language choice and whether they will participate in band, orchestra or choir. Parents are also encouraged to submit a letter about their child’s placement to the middle school principal.
• Math placement meetings also take place and input from Phil Collins is incorporated.
• Placing students on teams requires balance – NWEA scores, gender, school split, friend requests, geographic location and ELL needs are all considered.
• Social workers meet with students and are assigned to the student throughout middle school.
• August 9th – Teams posted at middle schools.
• August 15th – Open house at middle schools.
