EC Teaching & Learning
The Early Childhood Program uses a play-based approach to instruct students in the areas of pre-academics, fine and gross motor skills, communication skills, and social and emotional development. An interdisciplinary approach is used to best support students with Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Social Workers, and Psychologists. The use of an interdisciplinary team allows us to support students in a meaningful way that addresses the "whole child".
All instruction is intended to address the "Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards". These standards are met with use of the following resources:
- The Creative Curriculum
- Second Step Program
- Handwriting Without Tears
Each classroom uses a variety of learning centers including science and discovery, art, reading, dramatic play, manipulatives, blocks, and outdoor learning. Students also attend twice weekly Music and Movement classes. Units are often developed with student interests and needs in mind.
