What's On Your Plate? A Winning Recipe!

The Food & Nutrition Services Department is excited to announce the winner of the first-ever "What's On Your Plate?" District 34 family recipe contest! This contest is all about sharing the culture, traditions, and food of our community through favorite recipes.

Seventeen recipes were submitted, from appetizers to main dishes to desserts, with cuisines from Armenian to Indian, Bulgarian to Sri Lankan, American to Italian. The Food & Nutrition Services team selected four recipes that were adaptable to our food service abilities and requirements of the USDA school meal guidelines, and then they set out on a taste testing adventure. They prepared bite-sized portions of each recipe, and visited five schools and 14 classrooms plus middle school groups across the district throughout March. 330 students filled out rating forms to provide their feedback on the appearance and flavor of each food.

The recipes tested were:

  • Chicken Curry
  • Guacamole
  • Yum Yum Chicken
  • Zucchini Pesto Pasta

Based on student feedback, the winning recipe, submitted by the family of Lyon kindergartener Emmett Schad, is Yum Yum Chicken! Emmett will be serving Yum Yum Chicken at Lyon on May 7, when all K-5 schools will feature this meal on their menus. It will be on the menu at Springman and Attea on Friday, May 3.

You can try Yum Yum Chicken at home; the original recipe from Emmett and his family is on our Food & Nutrition Services page.

The array of submissions highlighted the diversity and richness of our community! Look for news about the 2024-2025 contest in the fall of 2024.
