Students holding hands around the world

Welcome! District 34 is committed to providing a high-quality program for English Learners (ELs). We believe that valuing your child’s native language and culture is the best way to help them succeed academically and socially in our diverse community.

Fast Facts: Our Diverse Community

  • 34% of our students come from homes where a language other than English is spoken.
  • Over 60 different languages are spoken by families in our district.
  • 17% of our student population qualify for additional English Language services.

What We Value

We believe in a "whole child" approach. Here are the core principles that guide our programs:

1. We Value the Home Language: We believe your child's first language is an asset.

  • Why: Research shows that keeping a strong foundation in your native language actually acts as a bridge to learning English. Furthermore, developing a 'bilingual brain' offers life-long cognitive benefits, such as enhanced creativity and sharper critical thinking skills.
  • Our Goal: We encourage you to continue speaking and reading in your home language. We aim to help students master literacy in their first language whenever possible.

2. We Value Language Development: We focus on academic English, the primary language of instruction, and the support of home language to bridge learning.

  • How: We use research-based instructional approaches to focus on your child’s development in vocabulary, reading, and comprehension across all content areas.
  • Collaboration: English Learner (EL) teachers and classroom/content teachers work together to ensure English lessons align with the state (WIDA) standards.

3. We Value Academic Success: Students should not have to choose between receiving English language services and learning other subjects with their peers.

  • How: We teach the core curriculum (Math, Science, Social Studies) while teaching English.
  • Support: EL teachers collaborate to make sure lessons are understandable and connected to your child’s background knowledge.

4. We Value All Students: We see our diverse student population as a major strength.

  • How: We celebrate culture at the classroom, building, and district levels. We invest in books and literature that represent our student population and provide training for our staff on cultural responsiveness.

5. We Value Families: We want you to be an active part of your child’s education.

  • How: We offer workshops specifically for families of English Learners.
  • Our Promise: We strive to remove barriers to your involvement and recognize that cultural differences shape how families interact with schools. We are here to support you.
