Schedule Changes for 2020-2021
Two changes set for the 2020-2021 school year will provide increased learning opportunities for students and staff:
- Longer School Day
- Weekly Late Starts ("Late Start Wednesday")
These changes are the result of long and thoughtful discussions between District 34 teachers, staff, administrators and the Board of Education, and are part of the The Constitution, D34’s teachers’ contract, ratified in June 2019. They also align with two of the District 34 Strategic Plan goals: Student Success & Well Being and Educator Growth & Support.
Longer School Day
Starting with the 2020-2021 school year, students will spend more time learning. The school day will be increased by 20 minutes at all primary, intermediate and middle schools.
Weekly Late Starts
Also starting in 2020-2021, there will be a once-a-week, one-hour Late Start Wednesday in the calendar.
Our teachers are learners as well. As we make changes to curriculum and programming, we must provide systematic time for professional development to ensure teachers have the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide the highest-quality instruction for students. Teachers also need time to collaborate to build alignment across teams, grade levels and buildings. That time together not only enhances professional learning, it increases opportunities to share ideas, brainstorm, and focus on addressing student needs. It’s true in teaching: We’re better together.
